When it comes to sailing, yachting, and boating in general, traveling at nighttime is always more of a challenge than traveling by day. In fact, everything is more difficult at night. It is no secret as to why. There just isn’t enough light to see all of the things you need to see. There could be debris floating in the water that could damage your boat, or even other boats that aren’t properly illuminated. You can’t see channel markers or buoys as well either. But there are two ways of remedying this problem and they can come in handy, especially if you are on a long trip and feel you absolutely must travel in the dark.
Probably the most obvious means of traveling by night is to get a spotlight to light up your path. There are plenty of spotlights available for your boat and nearly all of them are remote controlled. Having a remote controllable light is nice because you don’t have to leave the helm in order to point it where you need it to shine. Spotlights are also reasonably priced most of the time. Plus, in an emergency the spotlight can double as a signal to let any boats in the area know that you need help.
Of course, there is a downside to using a spotlight. Though they are bright and can light up a fair distance if front of you, the field of vision from the helm isn’t very broad. Even if you see something up ahead, you might not be able to tell what it is until you are right on top of it. However, you could get a camera to point out in front of you to work with the spotlight. That way, you will have a better field of vision and if you have a decent camera, you can zoom in on a distant object. But even then, the lighting will be limited.
A better means of seeing in the darkness is with a different kind of camera. A night vision camera can see into the darkness much better than a spotlight, even in tandem with a normal camera. A night vision camera offers a broader field of vision and it can see much farther as well. These special cameras are also remote controlled so that you can look anywhere around your boat. This helps while traveling, docking, or even looking for someone who fell overboard. It can also work well in smoke or light fog. While a spotlight can be used in those conditions too, it doesn’t work nearly as well as a night time vision camera.
The biggest problem with a nighttime vision camera though is that it costs a whole lot of money. You can expect to spend thousands of dollars whereas a spotlight will rarely cost you close to $1000. But that is the price you have to pay for such an excellent piece of equipment.
No matter what you choose to help you see at night, you should proceed at a reasonable speed. Going full speed in the darkness is never a good idea, even if you have the best night vision available. Safety is very important, so have fun but be safe.
