There are a lot of people in the world who dream of sailing around the world, or at least taking an extended voyage by sea. But these people who like to dream of going to sea don’t usually think about the things that they absolutely have to have with them. If you are actually considering going on a similar journey then here is a list of “must have” items that you should take.
1. Marine Power Generator – Even on a sailboat there are things that need electricity. You will need power for your navigational systems, a refrigerator, air conditioner, and maybe even some cooking appliances. But be sure to get a marine power generator since they are actually designed to be around water.
2. Air Conditioner — Warm weather is nice, but there is such a thing as too hot. Having an air conditioner to cool your cabins isn’t just a luxury, it’s a necessity. What is extra handy is that most AC units have a reverse feature that makes the unit double as a heating system. That will come in handy on cold nights.
3. Watermaker — It is pretty common knowledge that we all need water in order to survive and that drinking sea water isn’t good for you. So, in order to get the water that you need for drinking and cooking, you need a watermaker or water purification system. Most watermakers are fairly priced, but all of them are indispensable.
4. Autopilot — Though sailing is fun, when you are on a long journey there are times when you need to take a break. Having an autopilot system is like having a great first mate, and many boaters say that their autopilot is the most important member of their crew. It will enable you to rest, relax, and have time to really enjoy your voyage.
5. Life Raft — Accidents happen when we least expect them. Don’t be caught off guard if and when something terrible happens. Be prepared and take a life raft with you, just in case. It might just save your life.
6. Survival Kit – Along with your life raft, you will need a kit full of things that you will need in order to survive. A survival kit will include things like food and water rations, a flashlight, signaling flares, and an EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon). You can put other helpful items in your survival kit, but you should have these items at the very least.
7. Journal – Last but definitely not least, you will want some sort of journal for your journey. You can use a handwritten journal, an audio log, or even use a video camera. No matter what method you use, you will be so thankful after your sea voyage is over when you can look back and easily remember every detail for years to come.
Having all of these items is a must if you want to have a successful and enjoyable voyage. Of course, there are other obvious things that you should take as well, such as a chartplotter and all the charts you’ll need. But when you are planning the adventure of a lifetime, don’t forget to take these 7 must have items.
