Have you ever wished that you had eyes in the back of your head? Or maybe wished that you could see other places without actually being there? Well, now you can have your wishes fulfilled to a degree with marine cameras placed strategically around your boat. But, as with anything and everything, there are good things and bad things about these cameras. I hope to tell you the primary pros and cons so that you can make a better decision when purchasing these devices for your vessel.
One of the most obvious benefits of having cameras placed aboard your favorite watercraft is security. There are some desperate people out there who will board ships while they are at the docks and steal stuff or vandalize. However, if you have cameras up then they will be less likely to victimize you. The same goes for thefts while at sea. If you have a lot of people aboard then you can keep an eye on luggage and things like that; though hopefully that won’t be necessary.
Another benefit of having marine cameras is safety, both for your passengers and your boat. With marine cameras set up throughout your boat, you can make sure your engine room is safe. You can also make sure that any kids that are aboard aren’t getting themselves into too much trouble by going where they aren’t supposed to. If someone has a sudden medical problem and they are alone, the cameras could catch it and you could end up saving their life. The same goes with people going overboard.
Marine cameras are also helpful navigational tools. When traveling across the open waters you may occasionally come across fellow travelers. When this happens, it is great to have a few cameras pointed in every direction around the boat. This helps to make sure you aren’t going to run into anything or anyone, or vice versa. The cameras also help you gain sight in your blind spots, which makes docking that much easier.
The Cons
One of the worst things that can happen is becoming over dependent on the cameras for navigational help or monitoring the passengers and crew. Though they help a lot, you should always remember to use your own eyes to look at the water from time to time. You also want to be personable with the passengers and keep in touch with your crew instead of only viewing them all through a camera lens.
Another downside to marine cameras is that they can be a pain in the neck to install. This isn’t too big of a deal though since you can hire someone to install them for you. Just be sure to be involved with the installation process so that you will be more capable when it comes to troubleshooting.
Spending can also be a problem for some people because no one just buys cameras. You must buy cables and monitors as well. If you are having someone install them for you, then there goes another chunk of money.
Even though there are some downsides to having marine cameras on your boat, they pale in comparison to the benefits that can be gained. Your boating experience and maritime fun will only be enhanced by their presence. You won’t regret having them in place and you may even end up suggesting that your friends have some installed as well.
