Five Important Uses for a Searchlight at Sea

searchlightIf you haven’t figured it out by now, light is a pretty important part of our lives. Sadly, our eyes aren’t equipped with night vision. Thankfully though, we have lights to light up our world. We use them in our houses, on our streets, and on our cars. But nowhere is light more important than at sea, which is why people have searchlights installed on their boats. And what is great about searchlights on a boat is that they are usually remote control operated and can be pointed practically anywhere. But why would you need light on a boat?

One of the things to look for while navigating the water is buoys. Buoys are markers that let boaters know where they should or shouldn’t go. Sometimes they mark off areas that are being dredged. Dredging is when material is being brought up from the water’s floor. Buoys are also used to mark fishing areas that should be avoided by non-fishing boats. At other times though, they mark the entry into a channel, which can be helpful if you need to pass through it. At night though, buoys can be hard to spot. As you can imagine, a searchlight would really come in handy.

Another use for a searchlight is also related to navigation. When you have found the channel that you need to go through, you may need some light to get through it safely. This is especially true if the channel is narrow and winds this way and that. Without a searchlight you could end up causing some serious damage to your boat’s hull or worse, you could sink it.

But let’s pretend for a moment that you, your boat, and everyone aboard was in danger. There are several ways that you could let others know your situation and a searchlight is one of them. Some searchlights have an automatic SOS feature built into them. That way if someone is nearby, they will see your signal if they don’t hear your radio mayday. The more ways you have to alert others of your emergency the better.

One emergency that unfortunately happens from time to time has to do with people going overboard. Going overboard can be a terrifying experience for everyone and finding the overboard man or woman can be difficult at night. However, it is a lot easier if you have a searchlight aboard. In fact, you are much more likely to save someone’s life by having a searchlight than sailing without one.

One use that some people don’t think of for a searchlight is for navigation through fog. While aiming a bright beam right where you are headed isn’t a good idea, aiming it straight up isn’t a bad idea. Aiming it where you want to go will only make it harder to see through the fog, unless you can get the light dim enough. But aiming the light straight up won’t hinder your vision and it will illuminate the fog around your boat to help other boats see you.

As you can see, having a searchlight for your boat is imperative. It will help you navigate better, help you find overboard passengers or crew, and help others see you in the thickness of fog. So, if you haven’t already had a searchlight installed, you should really think about having that done soon so you can have the power of light on your side.
